Ibuprofen is a non steroidal analgesic ( relive pain), antipyretic ( prevent / reduce fever) and anti inflammatory agent. Its anti inflammatory properties are equivalent to aspirin but its analgesic properties are more effective than acetaminophen and aspirin.
It is available in oral and topical administration forms.
Indications:
Ibuprofen is indicated in the conditions like cystic fibrosis ( inherited disorder that causes damage to lungs and digestive system), arthritis, fever, nausea,
vomiting, rheumatoid arthritis ( autoimmune and inflammatory disease), toothache, alternative drug in acute arthritis, IBD ( inflammatory bowel disease) .
Contradictions:
Ibuprofen is contraindicated in conditions for example peptic ulcer, renal failure, hypersensitivity, and bronchospasm.
Side effects:
Side effects may include thrombocytopenia (low blood count), high blood pressure, vomiting , peptic ulceration, hematemesis (vomiting of blood).
In the case of acute overdose:
In the case of acute overdose side effects may include: coma seizures, acidosis, ataxia ( lack of muscle control), headache, cardiac arrhythmias, renal and hepatic dysfunction.
Warnings:
Ibuprofen should be given with caution to the patients who are on anticoagulants or with cardiac dysfunction, and hypertensive. Discontinue ibuprofen in the case of skin reaction.
High risks:
Ibuprofen should not to be given to neonates.
